Ahmed Al-Mashhadani is an extraordinary example of resilience and courage. Earlier this month I had the pleasure of meeting him and learning about his journey. He arrived in Liverpool from Iraq just over three years ago. In Iraq, Ahmed was a computer science engineer, working closely with the Australian Defence Force to provide internet services to our personnel deployed there. In Australia, Ahmed wanted to be a good role model to his children and was studying IT at TAFE when he was told about apprenticeships by friends. Ahmed applied to be an electrical apprentice and was accepted into an apprenticeship with Sydney Trains. At the end of his first year, he was awarded the Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarship by the NSW Department of Education in recognition of his capability in the vocational training program, his positive attitude and his commitment to both the workplace and the training. The financial assistance will help him to support his young family as he completes his apprenticeship. Ahmed told me that he loves the supportive environment and care for wellbeing that he walks into at Sydney Trains every day. I congratulate Ahmed. We are so proud of his achievement.
