Bonnyrigg Khmer School

25 March 2026

Since 1991, the Bonnyrigg Khmer School has taught Khmer language, literacy and traditional dance during school term to primary and secondary school students each Sunday morning, next to the Bonnyrigg Khmer Temple. As the school celebrates its 35th birthday this weekend, a very special milestone, I want to congratulate the Principal, Mrs Sorathy Pouk Michell, and Mr Michael Michell, the Secretary. Over the last 3 and a half decades, they have been instrumental in successfully advocating for the introduction the Khmer language into NSW Government primary and secondary schools. They have also ensured that hundreds of young people are connected to the language and cultural traditions of their ancestors right here in multicultural Australia. The impact this has on ensuring young people have a sense of belonging and identity cannot be overstated. The Khmer School is run by volunteer teachers and a parent management committee, with some funding support from the NSW Community Language Schools Program. I acknowledge the hard work of the parents and volunteers over the last 35 years in keeping the school strong and vibrant. Here's to many more years of shaping confident language learners in our community!
