Karla Gómez Merino and Robinson Olivares

12 November 2025

A couple of months ago, I had the pleasure of watching Karla Gómez Merino and Robinson Olivares become Australia's national cueca champions for 2025. Karla, a Liverpool resident, and Robinson battled couples from across Australia at the Uruguayan club in Hinchinbrook in a wonderful display of Chilean culture and tradition. Cueca Chilena, the national dance of Chile, is a courtship dance that depicts the mating ritual between a rooster and a hen. It is characterised by a lively, rhythmic performance where dancers use handkerchiefs to represent feathers as they perform to reflect movements like circling, retreating and stomping. I saw the wonderful Chilean community come together again for Cuecazo at Club Cobreloa with one purpose: to support the champions who will proudly represent Australia at the World Cueca Championship in Switzerland. I recognise the work of Cristian Torres Valderrama, Jeannette Oujani, Carmen Pueyes and the entire Cofo Chilex Australia organisation for a deep commitment and passion for promoting Chilean folklore. Buena suerte, Karla y Robinson!
