Mandaean Remembrance Day

11 September 2025

I recently had the privilege of joining Liverpool's large and growing Mandaean community to mark Mandaean Remembrance Day. The solemn occasion honoured the memory of Mandaeans who lost their lives in Iraq and Iran, and acknowledged the long history of persecution the community has endured. Today nearly 95 per cent of Mandaeans live in diaspora communities across the world, including here in Australia. In Liverpool and across New South Wales, the Mandaean community continues to carry forward its heritage, resilience and cultural identity, including its ancient language, despite the hardships of displacement. The commemoration in Liverpool was an important opportunity to raise awareness of the sacrifices endured, the challenges of exile and the determination of a people committed to preserving their language, faith and traditions for future generations. I particularly thank Samandra for sharing a powerful story. The event is led by young people in the community, which is always a good thing.
