Nowruz marks the beginning of a new year and the arrival of spring, which symbolises renewal, hope, unity and new beginnings. It is celebrated by a number of communities, including the growing Afghan community in Liverpool. I recently joined the Afghan Fajar Association Inc. and the New South Wales Settlement Partnership Afghan consortium, which is made up of the Kateb Hazara Association, Dai Cultural Association and SABA Hazara Group, for the cross-cultural festival of Nowruz. The event celebrated the rich heritage of Afghan and broader multicultural communities and reflected the values of respect, harmony and togetherness that strengthen our society. Through cultural performances, food, family activities and community engagement, the event provided a welcoming and inclusive space for all. I met Maryam Hosseini, who is a wonderful visual artist whose work intertwines culture and her journey to reflect beauty and resilience. I was also delighted to bump into Mohammed, a former vice-captain of Miller Technology High School, and heard about his experiences at uni. I commend the volunteers and all those whose hard work made this festival possible. Their commitment to social cohesion and understanding creates opportunities for meaningful connection.
